Ice Hotels, four of them

It starts with a bird. The name is the Finnish word for a forest bird of the north, and the company took it for a group of winter properties in the fell village rather than naming them after the village itself, so a creature of the pine woods ended up over several doors.

The word itself is a bird name in everyday Finnish, used by anyone who walks in these forests and long before any hotel used it. There is no hidden second meaning we could find, and none is needed. What the bird meant to whoever chose it is not stated in the material we opened.

On the ground it is a winter address above all, since the village works to a snow season, and the bird's name is used for several separate houses at once. Asking for it by name in the village gets you a question in return: which one.

It starts with the fell that stands over the village. The hotel took the name of that high ground and set a second word beside it, so the sign carries a landform first and a literary word second, and the two together describe where the house stands rather than what happens inside it.

The word itself is a pairing. Ylläs is the name of the fell, and saaga is the Finnish form of the word saga, borrowed from the northern languages that use it for a told story. Why the two were joined for this house is not explained in anything we were able to open, so we leave it there.

On the ground it is the fell that answers, not the hotel, because everything in the village is described by its relation to that slope. The second half of the name is dropped in speech, and visitors quickly learn to give directions the same way.

It starts with a village and a star. The house is named for the settlement of Sirkka, the older village beside the fell that the ski area later grew around, and joins to it the Finnish word for star, so the sign holds a small place name and a bright thing in one breath.

The word itself divides cleanly. Sirkka is the village name, and tähti is the ordinary Finnish word for a star, joined here in the possessive form that Finnish uses to tie one thing to another. Why a star rather than something else was chosen is not set out in the material we opened.

On the ground it is the village half that carries weight, since Sirkka is what older residents call the whole area, and the fell name belongs to the newer resort. The star is treated as decoration on a name that is really about a village.

It starts with the sky rather than with the ground. The name is assembled from words about the sky and about the light that appears over the north in winter, and it was built for the house rather than inherited from the town, the river or any family who lived here before it opened.

The word itself is a constructed compound, and we treat it as one. Published material describes the name as pointing at the northern sky and its light, and we have found no statement from the operator setting out the choice. Reading further would be our invention, and this is as far as the published record goes.
