Our descriptions of where a name came from are editorial writing based on published material. They are not linguistic expertise, they do not establish the origin of any word, and they should not be cited as though they did. Where sources disagree or fall silent we say so rather than choosing for you.

We make no warranty that anything here is current. Hotels change hands, change names and change what they offer, and a page written honestly in one month can be out of date in the next. Check with the property itself before you make any arrangement that depends on what you read here.

External links are given for the reader's convenience. We do not control the pages at the other end and we take no responsibility for their content, their accuracy or their handling of your data.

The text on this site is ours, and photographs are the work of the photographer we commission. Reproduction beyond ordinary quotation with a link requires our permission in writing.
